"thanks for the lift"

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-eight years and a million words

Toronto, 2011.11.03

The elevators were on the blink today at the office, and the security guard was manually making them work with a key.

As we arose with two passengers aboard, I leaned past the other passenger and said the guard, "Thanks for the lift." and followed up with a fruity chortle.

He looked at me blankly. The other passenger rolled her eyes and shook her head.

I really didn't foresee the Internet. But then, neither did the computer industry. Not that that tells us very much of course - the computer industry didn't even foresee that the century was going to end.
